The Ideal Candidate

This is a demanding and visible role requiring a confident, seasoned manager with the necessary vision and policy background, entrepreneurial spirit, diplomatic skill, and good business sense to forge the next phase of HHC’s advocacy work.  The HHC seeks a strategist and facilitator capable of building inter-organizational and public support, as well as an operations person who has proven capable of leading an enterprise through a similar phase of development.  The ideal candidate must be a team player who can perform well within a senior management team consisting of highly educated, very committed individuals.  The ideal candidate has a deep-rooted belief in social justice, and is also familiar with the community of nonprofit organizations in Connecticut, brings their own network of contacts, and would have the following professional background and personal characteristics.

Professional Background

  • An advanced studies degree in public health, public policy, social work, law or a related analytical discipline.
  • A strong policy analysis background with demonstrated experience conducting advocacy, as well as community-based research and education.

Executive Assistant

The Hispanic Health Council has an opening for a full-time (35 hours) Executive Assistant.   The Executive Assistant is responsible for organizing the day-to-day activities of the executive director.   In addition to typing, filing, and scheduling, the Executive Assistant performs duties such as, interfacing with agency staff and external constituents; and working on special projects. The position requires exceptional talent in relating with people across a wide variety of sectors.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between internal staff and/or external partners and the ED
  • Maintain the ED’s schedule and assist the ED in prioritizing meetings and work streams
  • Coordinate travel and schedule meetings and events
  • Field phone calls and draft correspondence on behalf of the ED
  • Help the ED prepare for major partnership and Board of Directors meetings
  • Take minutes at various committee and team meetings
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

The Hispanic Health Council (HHC) has a full time position open for a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.  The position is part of a grant-funded, multi-year study designed to see if peer counseling, specialized for obese women, can be an effective strategy towards promoting and supporting the World Health Organization’s recommendation to exclusively breastfeed for at least 6 months, among this population. The study is being conducted as a partnership between the University of Connecticut-Department of Nutritional Sciences, the HHC, and Hartford Hospital; and in close coordination with the “Breastfeeding: Heritage and Pride (BHP),” breastfeeding peer counseling program, based at the HHC and Hartford Hospital.  This peer counselor will support obese community women in breastfeeding exclusively through six months; through education, support and hands-on assistance with breastfeeding management, in hospital, home and community settings.

Major Responsibilities

  • Conduct prenatal and post partum home visits and in-patient post partum hospital rounds
  • Document all client contact and attempted client contact thoroughly, accurately and promptly
  • Collaborate closely with all team members involved in this study, from: Hispanic Health Council, University of Connecticut-Department of Nutritional Sciences and Hartford Hospital
  • Routinely check for deliveries of BESTOW participants on Bliss 6
  • Notify study coordinator when study participants are admitted to the maternity ward
  • Meet regularly with study coordinator to monitor progress and compliance with study protocols
  • Actively participate in initial and ongoing training
  • Assist with the development of the BESTOW:EDD recruitment video
  • Help identify a family to participate in BESTOW:EDD video
  • Translate the BESTOW:EDD narrative text into Spanish
  • Translate educational materials into Spanish
  • If time permits, assist the BHP Program with prenatal recruitment of non-obese clients
  • If time permits, assist the BHP Program by providing service to non-obese clients

Qualifications

Essential: Six month minimum of breastfeeding at least one child; enthusiasm for and commitment to exclusive breastfeeding as an important health and family practice; high school diploma or GED; high comfort level conducting home visits alone in Hartford; high comfort level working as part of a health care team and interacting with doctors, nurses and other health providers at Hartford Hospital; high comfort level working supportively with obese women; interest and ability to learn technical information about breastfeeding benefits and management; bilingual English/Spanish – able to translate written educational materials from English to Spanish; able to document work accurately and thoroughly; flexible schedule – ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary; able to establish trust with study participants; own transportation and valid CT drivers license.
Preferred: familiar with Hartford; experience with clinical or community health work.

Community Connections Core Coordinator

The Hispanic Health Council, a community-based health research, service, policy and advocacy institute in Hartford, CT is pleased to announce an immediate opening for the Coordinator of the Community Liaison Core for the new multidisciplinary Latinos Health Disparities Center (a collaborative initiative of the University of Connecticut, the Hispanic Health Council, and Hartford Hospital).  The new Center, part of a multimillion dollar effort to study health disparities among Latinos in Connecticut, will be responsible for developing partnerships with community providers, grassroots initiatives, and community leaders and advocates that insure that all research initiatives developed through the Center are responsive to the expressed needs and produce direct benefit for the community, inform Center scientists about Latino community needs and concerns, develop community sensitive strategies and recommendations for community-based research, and disseminate research findings to the community.

Responsibilities:

  • Publicize the Center and build community partnerships for research, assessment of community concerns, and dissemination of Center research findings; be visible and active in the community around health issues as a representative of the Center and the Hispanic Health Council.
  • Establish linkages with Latino organizations and community organizations that serve Latino clients statewide in Connecticut.
  • Develop and coordinate a Community Advisory Board (CAB) for the Center.
  • Regularly attend meetings of key health-related groups in the state.
  • Organize focus groups at Latino community organizations around the state to monitor health disparity and nutritional health concerns, attitudes, and needs.
  • Prepare and update an ACCESS database of representatives from Latino and other relevant CBOs and other key individuals, statewide, engaged in health disparities prevention-related work.
  • Serve as liaison between Center scientists and the community, including facilitating community requests for consultation from Center scientists.
  • Coordinate La Noticia de Salud, the Center’s quarterly bilingual community based research and health disparities newsletter.

Qualifications:

  • MA/MPH/ or equivalent or higher degree in health or research field; career focus and 3 years experience in program management and coordination; demonstrated track record in planning and coordinating community activities and events.  Well-organized with attention to details; self-motivated; good writing ability; good communication skills; good interpersonal and interdisciplinary skills, good planning and coordination skills.  English/Spanish bilingual fluency (speaking and writing).

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/Assistant Program Coordinator

The Hispanic Health Council has one full-time position open for a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/Assistant Program Coordinator who will be part of the Breastfeeding: Heritage and Pride Program, which operates as a partnership between the HHC, Hartford Hospital and the University of Connecticut.  The purpose of the program is to increase incidence and duration of breastfeeding among low-income women who give birth at Hartford Hospital.  This position will include: 1) functioning as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (60%); and 2) assisting with coordinating program operations (40%);

Duties and Responsibilities

Assisting with coordinating the following program operations:

  • Maintenance of program schedules and database
  • Maintenance of client charts and program forms
  • Preparation of weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports
  • Preparation and maintenance of program schedules
  • Training new staff
  • Development of program initiatives, activities, protocols and forms
  • Staff supervision and program coordination (in the case of absence of Program Coordinator)
  • Participation in relevant committees/public activities, as delegated by Program Coordinator
  • Conducting other tasks as assigned by Program Coordinator

Peer counseling activities:

  • Conduct prenatal and post partum home visits

Interviewer/Nutrition Educator

Family Nutrition Program

The Hispanic Health Council has a full-time opening (35 hour per week) for a bilingual interviewer/nutrition educator in its Family Nutrition Program.  This program provides nutrition education services to low income families living in the Hartford area, and it also has a strong research component that includes conducting surveys and interviews in order to: 1) collect information from the Latino community on various aspects of nutrition, and 2) to provide baseline and evaluation information for the nutrition services and interventions conducted by the Family Nutrition Program.  

Responsibilities
  • Recruit study participants at hospitals, community agencies and other community sites, or through street outreach
  • Conduct interviews at the Hispanic Health Council, at respondent homes, on the street, at agencies, etc.
  • Schedule, confirm, conduct, edit, code and revise interviews
  • Conduct necessary paper work, including but not limited to making copies of fliers and questionnaires, preparing educational packages, etc.
  • Conduct puppet shows as needed, as back-up to the program’s nutrition educators
  • Participate in the implementation of nutrition education presentations at schools, community agencies and health fairs.
  • Participate in nutrition and public health conferences and other trainings, including those offered by the PANA Program
  • Participate in other activities within the Center for Community Nutrition as needed
  • Participate in other Center or general Hispanic Health Council activities, events, etc., as needed and as time permits

 

Qualifications

Required: Must have enthusiasm for nutrition and community work, have good interpersonal and communication skills in individual and group context, be bilingual and bicultural (Spanish/English), have a high school diploma, have a car and a current driver's license, have excellent documentation skills, work well as part of a team, and be flexible as to day to day duties.
 Recommended/Preferred: Further studies in nutrition or related fields, familiarity with Hartford area,  community outreach experience.
